Once more into the Fray…

Have you ever had a near-death experience?

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The future was dark, uncertain, not knowing if I would survive it. I wrote goodbye letters to my family, my children.

The experience reminds me of one of my favorite movies, 'The Grey' starring Liam Neeson. In it, he faces death in the form of a giant wolf. He doesn't know if he'll to survive the brutal attack, but he stands his ground.

He recites the poem written by his father:

Once more into the fray…
Into the last good fight I'll ever know.
Live and die on this day…
Live and die on this day…

And then... the lights go out.

My last thoughts raced through my head as I lay on the operating table. I held a picture of my family. On the back of that picture was the poem from 'The Grey'. I was facing my own giant, proverbial wolf.

And then... the lights went out.
