The Hero without a cape

During our journey through Japan several years ago, my wife and I explored various destinations, mostly relying on trains for transportation. Japan is undeniably a stunning country that I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone.

So, one particular day, we were at a train station, although I can't recall the exact location. We had our hands full with two large bags, feeling a bit weary from our travels. To make things easier, we opted for the escalator. As we ascended, I noticed a frail, elderly gentleman just a few steps ahead of me.

Suddenly, near the top of the escalator, the old man stumbled and fell. Without hesitation, I swiftly dropped my bag (fortunately, my wife was behind me and managed to catch it), and I hurriedly made my way up to him. He lay on the ground at the end of the escalator, with one of his shoelaces caught in the mechanism. Acting swiftly, I grasped the lace tightly, pulling with urgency as if the old man's life depended on it, ultimately tearing it in half.

Thankfully, the danger was averted. I extended a helping hand to the fragile man, and as he looked into my eyes, a gentle smile appeared on his face. I checked to ensure he hadn't sustained any injuries, though I wished to apologize for the unintended damage to his shoelace. However, instead of reprimanding me, he began bowing and expressing his heartfelt gratitude.

The elderly man continued to speak and express his gratitude, although I couldn't comprehend his words beyond the simple "thank you." Nevertheless, I was overwhelmed by a profound sense of humility.

After a while, we bid each other farewell and boarded our train. Around half an hour later, to my surprise, I noticed the old man walking through the train's hallway in search of us. Upon finding us, he resumed his grateful bowing and expressions of thanks.

To my astonishment, on a subsequent occasion, the old man returned, this time accompanied by the train conductor. They both bowed deeply and showered me with their appreciation. I still wonder what the old man had said to convince the conductor to join in this gesture, considering that they were both strangers to one another. It was truly remarkable.

As our journey neared its end, we disembarked at our destination and began heading towards the exit. To my amazement, at the end of the platform, there stood the little old man once more, accompanied by a woman whom we assumed to be his daughter, waiting to pick him up. Both of them bowed deeply and expressed their gratitude towards me. In an attempt to communicate, the daughter spoke to us in English, trying to find out where we hailed from. However, it seemed that the small country of Belgium had yet to be discovered by them.

At that moment, we bid our final farewells. I was genuinely glad that I had been able to assist the elderly man that day. While I hadn't actually saved his life, he made me feel like a hero through his genuine appreciation.
