A.I. Artificial Intelligence@Model.Size>
2001, A.I. Artificial Intelligence. I'm not referring to Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, which also starred an AI entity, but rather the movie directed by Steven Spielberg.
AI has existed for way longer than one might think. And with it, a long list of Sci-Fi movies to depict the concept. I love Sci-Fi. Ever since I was a kid, born in the early 80's, I was mesmerized by them. I admire and respect the people who create them very much. For over 20 years I have been collecting dvd's and blu-ray discs. Yes, I'm one of those dinosaurs. Although I must admit, streaming channels (I personally have only one) have made me buy less physical movies, I still buy the ones that are really worth it. And if it's not available on the streaming channel, I can watch anytime I want on my dvd player.
The A.I. Artificial Intelligence movie is a classic with a great cast. It was a project originally started by Stanley Kubrick, but handed over to Steven Spielberg to direct, before he Stanley Kubrick passed away. It is set in a dystopian future where global warming is responsible for molten ice caps, causing rise of ocean waters, drowning all of the coastal cities in the process. Sound familiar?
There's a scene in the movie, where the protagonist visits another AI entity called Doctor Know, serving as a knowledge base to query. This really made me think of ChatGpt or any other AI Assistant for that matter. The only difference was that Doctor Know costed several credits (the currency in the movie) for each query, whereas querying the AI Assistants we know now are mostly for free. But everything comes with a price, whether we pay it now or later.
I'm enthusiastic about technological advancements, as it makes me believe the Sci-Fi from the movies is becoming less fictional over time. I've been around long enough to see things evolve really fast, and I've seen a lot of Sci-Fi concepts come to life. It excites me, but it also troubles me. The energy consumption that comes with AI and the environmental impact it has, is alarming. On the one hand, AI can do miracles when applied in ways that benefit humankind. But on the other hand, let's not drown coastal cities for the next AI-enabled tooth brush.
You should really watch the movie. Although it has been released over 2 decades ago already, it still makes you contemplate the past, the present and the future. I'm curious where it will bring us.
